Christian or Believer
In conversation I have challenged people to find out whether they are Christians or believers by asking them what doctrine they hold too.
Do you believe in Christ, are you born again, when were you born again,
If you are saved/born again there has to be a remembrance that a change happened at a certain time,
maybe a day or date can't be remembered but when and how should be remembered.
Do you believe in the baptism of the Holy spirit, what about baptism in water as an adult not child christening, and a real test is their standing on the subject of homosexuality, which is now LBGTQ+etc
This isn't to put people down but to raise the bar on people's understanding of salvation of Jesus and the Kingdom of God
For simplicity sake we are Christians but when you're among a group of people who call themselves Christians but you can see by their language and by the actions they are not Christians then you don't want to be called a christian, you want to be called a believer to somehow distinguish yourself from those people who clearly do not believe or hold to Christ and his teachings
So do you want to be called a Christian and compare yourself as a believer to those that go to a church and have LBGTQetc as part of their church culture and doctrine,
For them being a christian is important like club membership, but for the most part they don't embrace the Christ in christian.
I came across this YouTube argument with one guy arguing with the believer and he was claiming to be a "big Christian", the believer was witnessing to a homeless person, wanting to lead him to christ but the "big christian" was not interested in that, only enforcing his point of view which wasn't salvation
As Emmanuel has said 70-80% of south africans claim christianity as their religion, go a bit deeper and the claim is an alliance with a denomination, again not so much Christ, and then a denominations doctrine needs to be defended and brings division,
Hebrews 11:6 they are in doubt and unbelief
they have wrapped themselves up in
1Tim1:4+V6-7 and 1Tim6v4-5 - 2Tim2:16 - 2Tim2:23 Titus1:14 + V16
I did a search in a few different versions, I could only find three references in the New Testament to believers being called Christian.
Acts11:26 And finding him, he brought him to Antioch. And it happened to them a whole year they were assembled in the church. And they taught a considerable crowd. And the disciples were first called Christian in Antioch.
Acts26:28 And Agrippa said to Paul, Do you persuade me to be a Christian in but a little?
1Pet4:16 But if one suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God because of this.
People of the Way
John14:6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.
When Saul was still persecuting believers in acts 9:2 he talked about finding "any of the way"
Acts9:2 and asked letters from him to Damascus to the synagogues; so that if he found any of the Way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
Acts9:27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles and told them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had spoken boldly in Damascus in the name of Jesus.
Acts18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And Aquila and Priscilla heard him, and they took him and expounded to him the way of God more perfectly.
Acts19:9 But when some were hardened and did not believe, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
Acts19:23 And about that time there was not a little a stir about the Way.
Acts24:14 But I confess this to you, that after the Way which they call heresy, so I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things that are written in the Law and in the Prophets.
Acts24:22 And having heard these things, Felix put them off, knowing more accurately of the Way, saying, When Lysias the chiliarch has come down, I will examine the things concerning you.
There are 61 references to believers being called Saints in the new testament,
even in the old testament another 27 references.
2Cor 6:15 And what agreement does Christ have with Belial? Or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever?
There are about 73 new testament references to the body of Christ being called the church. (depending on the version you are reading)
